Zoltan Ivanovich Sholtes was born in Prekopa, Czechoslovakia, in 1909. Sholtes was one of the elders of the Transcarpathian School, founded by Josef Bokshay and Adalbert Erdely. Thanks to its originality, the Transcarpathian Art School became well-known in Czechoslovakia in the twenties and later in Hungary, making up the multinational Transcarpathian region.

After Soviet power was established in the Transcarpathian region Sholtes was not able to work in the art field. As a father of three children to support, he had to apply for work at a furnature plant where he worked for five years. He returned to the art field in the mid-nineteen-fifties.

Important exhibitions of his work include “All-Union Art Exhibition”, Moscow, 1946, and “All-Union Art Exhibition”, Moscow, 1947. He lived and worked in Uzhgorod, Ukraine, and specialized in landscapes.

Along with a few other artists, Sholtes became one of the founding members and core of the Uzhgorod regional division of the Artists’ Union of the Ukraine. In 1975 he became an Honored Artist of the Ukraine.
