Gleb Aleksandrovich Savinov was born in Natalievka, Ukraine, in 1915. His father, Alexander Ivanovich Savinov, was a well-established artist and Gleb’s first teacher. He eventually entered the Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture and studied there from 1934 to 1940 under A. Osmyorkin.
Savinov taught at the Repin Institute from 1945 to 1947 and then at the Mukhina Higher Art School from 1949. He was named an Honored Artist of the Soviet Union in 1973.

Savinov’s works are also in private collections in Russia, Europe, and the United States.
He lived and worked throughout his life in St. Petersburg. He was married to artist Olga Borisovna Bogaevskaya, who lived only 20 days after his death in 2000. Olga’s works appear in the background in many of Savinov’s paintings. His family was very important to him and was often the subject matter of his light-filled paintings.
