Alexander Mikhaylovich Nozhkin was born in Voronezh in 1958. He studied at the Bryansk Art College from 1977 to 1978. In 1983, he graduated from the Voronezh Art College. He was a painter and graphic artist, working in the Voronezh Production and Advertising Center, Voronezh Technical Railway College of the Southeast Railway Lines, and on the editorial staff as a senior artist of the Central Chernozem Publishing House. His work has been in many classics and books of children’s literature.
Since 1983, he participated in municipal, regional, zonal, republican and international exhibitions in Poznan, Gissen, Avinjon, Cologne, Berlin, Paris and others. He created compositions based on the synthesis of realistic and popular arts. In 1987, he switched from painting to the techniques of woodcut and etching. He is the author of the painting “Steeps of the Barkovaya Mountain” (1985); series of landscapes “Old Voronezh” (1986 - 1987); paintings “Circus actors” (1995 - 1996) and “Napoleon conquering Spain” (1994); abstract and fantastic series “Icons” (1993 - 1995); series of colored etchings “Alphabet for the new Russians” (1993), “Women” (1997), “Pictures for prettiness” (1999) and others; and also decorative and sculptural compositions of wood and iron miniatures.
After Nozhkin’s death in 2000 exhibitions took place in his honor in the Voronezh Exhibition Hall of the Artists Union and the Moscow New Manege. His works are represented in several collections in national museums and large galleries around the world in Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czechia and also New York and Los Angeles’ museums of modern art. They are also in many private collections of such persons as Richard Nixon, Courtney W. Smith, singer Madonna, heirs of the House of Romanov, and other from Russia, Belgium, Iraq, Germany, France and the United States.
