Vasili Monastyrny was born in the city of Kislovodsk in December of 1946. He graduated from the art school in Krasnodor in 1969, then worked in the Krasnodor Artistic and Indusctrial Academy. Between 1996 and 2001 he worked as a professor of drawing and painting in the Krasnodor art college. He was elected to be a member of the Union of Soveit Artists.

Considered to be a master of thematic genre paintings, his distinctive style is Realism. His work often reflects the peoples from his home region Krasnodor, often referred to as Kuban. In 1981 he won first prize at the Academy of Arts’ 7th All-Union National Artists Exhibition, then in 1988 he was the winner of the Lenin Komsomol Award in art.

He has been a participant of numerous regional, national and international exhibitions, such as:

  • ‘55th Anniversary of Victory’
  • ‘Art Manezh’, 2002.
  • ‘Mir Caucasus’, 2003.
  • ‘Russia International Art Salon’, 2004.
  • ‘TSDH’, 2004.

His major scenic works include:

  • “Relocation of Kuban Cossacks”
  • “Handing Money to Fund the Defense of the Country”
  • “Nocturne of 1943 City”
  • “Muzkomanda. Tango of Death”
  • “Farewell to War”, diptych.
  • “They Fought for the Motherland”, triptych.
  • “Series of Biblical Christian works”

He is also known for his monumental work. He created murals for the Agriculture Center of Collective Farms of Maistrenko, and did work in the Building Museum in Krasnoarmeysk region.

In 1996 he was featured in a TV documentary entitled “Right to Biography”.

Monastyrny’s works can be seen in quite a few museums and galleries including:

  • Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation
  • Museum of Art of Kovalenko
  • Kaliningrad Art Galleries

His paintings can aslo be found in various other galleries and private collections in Germany, France, Belgium and the United States.

He lives and works in Krasnodor.
