Likhachev, Mikhail Ivanovich

Photo

Mikhail Ivanovich Likhachev was born near the city of Voronezh in 1919 and began his artistic career designing for the Voronezh Theater.

He studied at the Voronezh Art College, then served in the army during World War II. Upon his return, he went to Moscow to study in the studio of Boris Ioganson.

As a member of the Artists’ Union of Russia, he participated in many major exhibitions throughout his career.

Likhachev is well-known for his historical studies, and his works can be seen in museums throughout Russia. He also documented the daily lives of ordinary people. It is these works, which capture the dignity of hard work and the joy of living, for which he is most famous.

Likhachev has been an influence and an inspiration to many artists in Voronezh. He may be the only artist to be named Honored Artist of Russia without having graduated from an art institute.

His works are in the former Soviet Union’s state collection, the permanent collection of the Russian Ministry of Culture, and in private collections in Russia and througout the world.

His works have been published in numerous books and journals, including:

  • “Tradition Rediscovered.” CommonPlace Publishing, New Canaan, CT.
  • “The Voronezh Artists’ Union.” A. V. Vashchenko, Voronezh, 2004.
