Vladimir Fedorovich Gurov was born in 1903 in the town of Kamyshino, not far from Volgograd in the Tsaritsyn province of Russia. He studied at the Saratov Art College from 1922 to 1929. He studied art at the Repin Institute of Art in St. Petersburg from 1932 to 1939. He taught at the LenFilm studios in St. Petersburg during the 1930s. He began exhibiting his work in 1939. That same year he moved back to Saratov and began teaching at the Saratov Art College, where he later became the leader of the school. He was the chairman of the Saratov branch of the Artists’ Union of Russia.
