Alexander Grigoryevich Gulyayev was born on September 11, 1917 in the town of Rubtsovsk in the Altai region of Russia. After moving with his family to Tashkent in 1933, he entered the Tashkent School of Art where he studied drawing and painting. He completed his studies there with a Merit in 1937. That same year he entered the Repin Academy of Arts in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).

Before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) he had completed four years of studies at the Repin Academy under Professors A. A. Karayev and M. D. Bersntein and in the studios of the well-known Soviet painters Yefin Cheptzov and Leonid Ovsiannikov.

Between 1941 and 1943 he served in the Army in the Cavalry Regiment. After being wounded in 1943 he was transferred to the reserve with a direction to continue studies at the Academy of Arts which was based in Samarkand at the time. From 1943 he studied in the studio of A. A. Osmiorkin. He graduated from the Repin Institute of Art in March of 1946. His diploma work was a painting entitled “Minin and Pozharsky” that now hangs in the Academy of Arts. That same year he became a member of the Leningrad chapter of the Artists’ Union of Russia.

Gulyayev started exhibiting his works while still a student, taking part in summer exhibitions from 1939 to 1941, then at an exhibition of Diploma works and at the Artists’ Union after 1949. He took part in local, Regional, Republican, and All-Russia spring and summer exhibitions. He also took part in “Our Contemporary”, exhibitions dedicated to the Soviet Army and a break-through Leningrad Blockade. Since 1950 he exhibited his works in almost all exhibitions of veterans of WWII in Leningrad. He painted Virgin Lands subjects during the 1950s.

His paintings can be found in many museums in Russia such as:

  • Museum of Radio Communications
  • Art Fund Collection of Russia

Gulyayev was awarded with twelve Government Medals and Orders.

His works have been published in various books and journals, including:
