Goncharov, Grigori Andreevich

Grigori Andreevich Goncharov was born in the town of Rossosh in the Voronezh Region in 1913. He was the older brother of Boris Andreevich Goncharov (1921-1959), another well known Russian painter. In his youth Grigori became attracted to drawing. He first studied with Aleksei Buchkuri, a pupil of Ilya Repin who headed a studio in Voronezh before the war, for three years. He also worked closely with Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar and Evgeni Aleksandrovich Katsman in the art studio of the Arts and Crafts Center. He began exhibiting his works in 1940.

During the Great Patriotic War (World War II), Goncharov served in the Russian army. He continued to paint, however, documenting the war and painting portraits of soldiers and officers. After the war, he returned to Voronezh and continued to paint. His paintings began to capture historical images and the rewards of peaceful labor. His works are remarkable for their sincerity and heartfelt spirit.

In 1950 Goncharov became a member of the Artists’ Union of the USSR. He has exhibited in regional, zonal, republican, and all-union exhibitions.

Goncharov died in 2001. His works may be found in the Kramskoi Art Museum in Voronezh and in private collections in Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Yugoslavia, Portugal, Japan, and the United States.
