Grigori Stepanovich Domnenko was born in 1922 in Kovali (Aleksandrinki?), Poltava province, Ukraine. He studied at the Voroshilovgrad Art College until 1950, and at the Kharkov Art Institute from 1950 to 1956. He was lived and worked in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan from 1956 to around 1960, then in Lugansk/Voroshilovgrad, Ukraine. He began exhibiting his works in 1951. He taught at the Alma-Ata Art College from 1956 to 1960. He was also a theater artist and graphic artist. He died in 1976.
