Alexander K. Bystrov was born in the Saratov Region in 1956. From 1979 to 1985 he studied at the department of monumental painting at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of professor and academician A. A. Mylnikov. From 1985 until 1989 he studied at the art studio of Professor Mylnikov. Since 1990 Bystrov has been teaching at the Repin Institute, and since 1995 he has been giving master classes at the Royal Academy in Olso, Norway, and in Peking and Shenjan, China. Since 1984 he has taken part in St. Petersburg, All-Union and international exhibitions and festivals.

Bystrov has participated in the restoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and a number of temples in St. Petersburg, Kursk and Kronstadt. He has created many monumental works for metro stations in St. Petersburg. In 2000 he was awarded the gold prize by the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. He is the head of a mosaic studio in the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.

Bystrov is holds the title “Honored Artist of Russia” as well as “Academician (full member) of the Academy of Fine Arts”, one of the most prestigious titles a Russian artist can hold.
